Alfred de Vigny's home
Lydia Jane Bunbury, Alfred de Vigny’s wife, was very ill and wanted to rest a lot. The couple then retired to their home in Maine-Giraud in Champagne-de-Blanzac. Later, in 1983, the commune was renamed Champagne-Vigny to pay tribute to the writer.
He then watches over a crippled and silent Lydia. In this large estate, the poet restores the main body and maintains the exteriors. He even negotiates the wine produced within his walls in the Monte Cristo hotel in Blanzac. These welcome breaks allow him to be inspired for his writing. He wrote part of his Mémoires de famille et de Mémoires politiques. He finished La mort du Loup and La bouteille à la mer, poems compiled in his collection Les destinées, completed in the tower of the house.
Alfred and Lydia lived from 1850 to 1853 at the Maine-Giraud house. The academician was the owner from 1827 to 1863. Before that, his grandfather had acquired it in 1768. When he first discovered this beautiful estate, he couldn’t help but describe it this way: “I was smitten with its melancholy and grave appearance and at the same time felt my heart clench at the sight of its ruins.” But he also says of him in his Mémoires inédits: “The breath of Terror had passed through this house.” A beautiful place to compose romantic texts.
The facades and roofs of the Maine-Giraud house were classified as historical monuments in 1967.
LE MAINE GIRAUD
Le logis du Maine-Giraud is located in the commune of Champagne-Vigny in the Charente department.
In 1768, the Marquis de Baraudin, Alfred de Vigny’s grandfather, acquired the estate. His grandson visited for the first time in 1823.
This beautiful manor belonged to him between 1827 and 1863. He lived there with his wife Lydia between 1850 and 1853.
In addition to the square tower to the west of the house, there is a polygonal tower in the centre. Dated 1464, it served as a study for the writer.
The estate produces pineau which can be bought after visiting its distillery.
