After a military career, Alfred de Vigny published his first poems in 1822. That same year, he was the best man at Victor Hugo’s wedding. He became the figure of Romanticism thanks to new texts such as Eloa and Le trappiste.
He wrote plays for Marie Dorval (Chatterton), performed at the Comédie française.
He subsequently published La mort du loup, La bouteille à la mer and Les destinées.
He was elected to chair 32 of the Académie française. A seat he held from 1845 to 1865.
