The towers of the port of La Rochelle
Jérôme K. Jérôme Bloche is destabilized by the first paid investigation he has to handle. The Baron de Verville sent him a letter asking for help because he was in danger. After a few days in La Rochelle, the case is stalled and the young detective has no tangible leads to discover the truth.
Jérôme eats badly, sleeps badly, wakes up at dawn and lets off steam by throwing stones in the city harbour. His ricochets don’t make him go any further. On the page written by Pierre Makyo and Serge Le Tendre and illustrated by Alain Dodier, readers discover the young man wearing his yellow raincoat and hat, not far from the famous two towers that symbolize the maritime city. The Saint-Nicolas tower faces the tower of the chain. Together with the Lantern Tower a few hundred meters away, they constitute fortresses for the defense of the port. Linked by a huge chain over the water, the Saint-Nicolas tower and the Chain tower, their military function is no longer relevant today.
Only volumes 1, 2, 3 and 5 are written by Pierre Makyo and Serge Le Tendre. The other volumes are entirely realized, history and drawing, by Alain Dodier.
Jérôme K. Jérôme Bloche’s famous motorized and backfiring machine is a solex 3800. He is not present in this volume 2 of the series.
The Chain Tower of La Rochelle
The two towers of the port of La Rochelle, the Tour Saint-Nicolas and the Tour de la Chaîne had a defensive vocation.
Together with the Lantern Tower, the Chain Tower and the Saint-Nicolas Tower allowed the maritime city to defend itself.
These two medieval buildings guarded the entrance to the port with a chain.
The Saint-Nicolas tower is the highest. It is made up of rooms, stairs and galleries.
The tower of the chain, as its name indicates, made it possible to go up and down the very heavy chains. Of cylindrical form, it measures 15 meters in diameter.
