“I feel younger because I have a menhir! If you want a bright future, buy a menhir…”

Abraracourcix and Obelix (from the album Asterix’s son)

When the firstAsterix adventure was created, Albert Uderzo wanted the main character to be big and strong, while René Goscinny wanted a small man. Accepting the choice of the scriptwriter, the artist will nevertheless succeed in placing his idea with the secondary character of the plot: Obelix.

After creating Obelix, the artist doesn’t really know what to do with him because the village is already home to a warrior, a blacksmith, a chief and peasants. The two friends decide to give Obelix a social role by assigning him the job of tailor and menhir delivery man.

A tall child with superhuman strength, the colossus spends his time carving blocks of rock. The twenty-third album, Obelix and Co, highlights Obelix’s profession. An intrigue in which he is manipulated by the Romans who buy large quantities of menhirs.

As elongated stone blocks have a strong place in the Asterix universe, Uderzo’s family decided to offer a menhir in Albert’s honor to the city of Angoulême. Having already received in 2017 an obelisk in tribute to René Goscinny, it was more than logical that a monument in honor of his friend be installed right next to it on the square of the Angoulême train station.

Uderzo’s menhir weighs 4.5 tons and measures 6 and a half meters. It was carved by François Desforges and Morgane Cabusa in a stone coming from the small Charente commune of Vilhonneur.

Angoulême Gare SNCF

Inaugurated on September 20, 1852, the Angoulême train station was built the same year the railroad arrived in the city.

The work on the station incorporated part of the former Royal College of the Navy. Napoleon III came for the inauguration on October 10, 1852. Sadly famous for having seen the transit of trains bound for concentration camps during the Second World War, it was also bombed on June 15, 1944 by American planes. The attack caused hundreds of deaths and extensive damage. 1,826,364 travelers passed through in 2019. The Angoulême station is open to freight service.
