“Here, a woman has been cut into pieces

Rue de la Bienséance, a stone’s throw from the castle

This morning we found a wicker trunk

Containing the pieces of Pelasie Rosier

A former dancer of the Folies Bergères

First prize for beauty and light dance

She was sixty years old, better known in the past

Under the proud pseudonym of Lola, Lola”.

Extract from the song La femme découpée en morceaux (lyrics: Jacques Demy, music: Michel Legrand)

Maxence (Jacques Perrin) is happy, he has the right to a leave. As he explains to Yvonne Garnier (Danielle Darrieux), the bar owner:“I’m going on leave to Nantes“. But the mother of the twins is less enthusiastic than he is. She tells him about the murder of Pélagie Rosier.

Upset, the young man goes to the house of the crime, rue du port. On the way, he meets Solange (Françoise Dorléac). As for Andy (Gene Kelly), he crosses paths with Delphine (Catherine Deneuve).

In front of the house with pink shutters, a mass of onlookers is gathered. Police officers ask the public not to stay: “Don’t stay there. Move along, be smart, we don’t want to be unfriendly to you. Don’t force us to punch you in the face.”

A few minutes walk away, at 77 rue Jean Jaurès, is the Alhambra-Colbert, a recording, sound effects and post-production studio. At the time of the film, this place was a cinema. Every evening after the shooting, Jacques Demy and his teams came to see the scenes shot during the day.

Lola, the nickname of Pélagie refers to the first film directed by Jacques Demy.

2016

The opening scene of Damien Chazelle’s 2016 film La La Land pays a real tribute to the one in Les Demoiselles de Rochefort.

Rue du Port

La rue du port is located in the city of Rochefort-sur-Mer in Charente-Maritime.

Not far from the river Charente, the rue du port allowed, as its name indicates, to reach the commercial port of the city of Rochefort.

It shelters many small fishermen’s houses. It is located not far from the municipal camping Le rayonnement and the national museum of the navy.
