François Deguelt's childhood home
Born in Tarbes, the young Louis François Deghelt was quickly entrusted to his grandmother in the town of Barbezieux-Saint-Hilaire in the Charente. The one who will become the famous interpreter of Le Ciel, le soleil et la mer, is a young man with a great talent for philosophy.
His talent in the field led him to Paris to take courses at the Sorbonne. It is on the benches of the institution that he finally decides to embrace a new career in the song. He performs in cabarets, including the Tire-Bouchon.
Then came the time of success with her participations in Eurovision, her evocative titles and her roles in movies. But the man who became François Deguelt has not forgotten his roots in the small Charente village. He returns frequently, to see his family and friends, to have a good time with those who called him “Loulou”. Legend has it that François did not choose this stage name for his father or his middle name, but for one of his childhood friends, François Boisnier. “They used to jam together in the Boisnier’s big house, avenue Charles-de-Gaulle. Loulou played, composed and interpreted his first songs on the family piano. It is to thank François Boisnier that he took this name.” recalled his childhood friend Suzette Jardry in the columns of Sud Ouest.
The singer even went so far as to include his grandmother’s childhood home on the cover of his album La Terre, located on rue du commandant Foucaud. And when in 2014, François Deguelt joined the stars, he chose for his last resting place the cemetery of the Charentais village. A square was named in his honor in 2019 to remind everyone of the illustrious child of Barbezieux.
François Deguelt has participated twice in Eurovision under the Monegasque flag.
2 Rue du Commandant Foucaud
One of the city’s main roads, rue du Commandant Foucaud leads straight to the Place du Champ de Foire, a lively place in the heart of Barbezieux.
