Cathedral

Movie Blanche and Marie Jacques Renard (1984)
The florist in front of the cathedral is more than just a shopkeeper. For the resistance fighters, it delivers coded messages and participates in the war effort. She is the one Marie (Sandrine Bonnaire) meets before going to the theater to meet a man who will play a role in the fight against the Nazi occupiers.

“Your fiancée Antoine, he’s waiting for you at the theater. For him you will be called Lucie.”

The florist (Véronique “Coquillette” Barrault)

Although the action of Blanche et Marie takes place in a city in the north of France, the entire production took place in Angoulême and its region. The department of Charente was thus put to contribution in the meticulous reconstitution of the director Jacques Renard.

While Angoulême is never explicitly named, for obvious reasons, the filmmaker has chosen to film very identifiable monuments in the background, such as the cathedral of Saint-Pierre.

The magnificent backdrop of Saint-Pierre Cathedral witnesses the adventures of Marie (Sandrine Bonnaire) as she prepares to meet a resistance fighter in a theater transformed into a museum by the Germans. No scene was shot there but she regularly appears, as a luxury extra.

4

Blanche and Marie is the fourth film in which the actress of the Splendid Véronique Barrault, known as Coquillette, appears.

Angoulême Cathedral

Built between 1100 and 1128, the Angoulême cathedral is a gothic style work built on the ruins of several others.

The current Angoulême cathedral is the fourth to stand on this site. The first one dates from the 4th century, the second from the 6th century and the last one from the 11th century.

Consecrated in 1128, the cathedral has suffered the trials of time and men. Damaged during the wars of Religion, it was registered with the titles of the historical monuments in 1840.
