“Mr. Jabot prepares to succeed in the world, frequents the public walks.”

The narrator, from Histoire de monsieur Jabot

If it is agreed to present Rodolphe Töpffer as “the inventor of the comic strip”, not all historians agree with this. Nevertheless, we can say that he is the first author to have established bridges between texts and illustrations. It was in the 1830s that the Swiss illustrator developed his plots in literary prints. If he has already created Festus, Crytogame or Vieux Bois, it is however Mr. Jabot the first to be published by the printer Caillet in 1833. This work is considered as the “ancestor” of the comic strip.

Close to Mr. Jourdain in Molière’s Bourgeois gentilhomme, Mr. Jabot tries to make a place for himself in the upper echelons of society. But his actions only turn into tragi-comic adventures.

Like many of Rodolphe Töpffer’s works, the Cité internationale de la bande dessinée d’Angoulême has in its collection the original version of L’histoire de monsieur Jabot. Labelled “Musée de France”, this public establishment of cultural cooperation is located in old wine storehouses along the Charente since 2009. In addition to the museum, the Cité houses a library, the Maison des auteurs, a cinema, a bookshop and conference rooms.
