“- Sorry miss, but I am in love.

– You are lucky.

– I do what I can.”

Andy (Gene Kelly) and Solange (Françoise Dorléac)

Gene Kelly was chosen by Jacques Demy to play in Les demoiselles de Rochefort because he embodied everything the director loved: singing, dancing and acting. He is already a big star of musicals, especially since Singing in the Rain. He plays Andy Miller, an American in love with a French woman.

One of the most important scenes in the film is when Boubou (Patrick Jeantet) leaves school. The little brother of the twins, Delphine (Catherine Deneuve) and Solange (Françoise Dorléac), leaves the school with his friends.

Andy crosses Solange’s road in this street at the exit of the school. Boubou is furious because his sister refuses to let him go to the fairground. She drops her things and the American actor helps her to pick them up, except for the score of the concerto which he keeps preciously.

With the exception of the little brother of the two Garnier sisters, all the other children were chosen by Gene Kelly and by the director of Emile Zola School, Mrs. Perfetti. Twelve girls and twelve boys had to run noisily out of the school and back to their moms as fast as possible. Happy with their fate, they were even on vacation two weeks before the others because of the shooting. But that day, it was very hot and the children’s crepe shirts had faded on the young extras’ skins.

As for the floor of the rue Bazeilles, it was also redone to be more slippery at the request of Gene Kelly to be able to dance as easily as possible.

Each sequence of the film was shot twice. One in French and the other in English for an international version that never saw the light of day.

Rue Bazeilles

The rue Bazeilles is an old artery located in Rochefort-sur-Mer in the department of Charente-Maritime.

Running along the Charente river, the rue Bazeilles was once home to many food warehouses.

Its harbor allowed to make them leave quickly from the city towards the ocean.

In front of this one, the food store was built in the 17th century, a place to store food for the city’s garrisons.
