Money Heist, Spain in the spotlight
Spain is mainly the scene of robberies by members of the group, although Panama, Italy and Thailand are also revealing some of their assets.
Season 1
National Coinage and Stamp Factory
The very first robbery takes place here, in the National Coinage and Stamp Factory. In fact, it is the façade of the Higher Council for Scientific Research in Madrid. In order not to disturb the scientists, the team of the series shot the outdoor scenes in the evening and on Sundays. For the Tokyo character (Úrsula Corberó), the creator of the series, Álex Pina, was strongly inspired by a well-known character in pop culture, Mathilda in the film Leon.

At the end of the first season, the Professor (Álvaro Morte) is discovered. His hiding place is 33 Alcantara Street. In fact, the shed in which he coordinated the entire robbery is located at 33 Miguel Yuste Street. Originally, each of the robbers was to have a fatal disease and this robbery was to be their very last shot. In the end, it was decided that only Berlin (Pedro Alonso) would be sentenced to death.

Casa de Toledo
Called Money Heist, the first hideout for robbers is located not far from Madrid. In reality, it is a house used for wedding ceremonies. In 2014, a criminal operation was dismantled in France in Rennes. Twelve people were involved in a plan to rob one of Europe’s largest banknote factories. A scenario reminiscent of a certain series…

The printing house
To duplicate banknotes in large quantities, very large presses are needed. For the series, the film crew moved to the ABC newspaper printing plant, Rotomadrid in Torrejón de Ardoz. To play his role as a teacher to perfection, Álvaro Morte had to take origami lessons and wear fake glasses. Uncomfortable for him, he is constantly putting them back in place, hence the teacher’s tic in the series.

Season 2
San Blas Islands
After the robbery, Tokyo and Rio (Miguel Herrán) are basking on an almost deserted island. This is where he was arrested after the young woman’s departure. The archipelago is made up of 365 islets of which only 60 are inhabited, a godsend for those seeking to hide. If the song Bella Ciao has become the anthem of Money Heist, originally it was included in the series to emphasize the anti-fascist side of the professor and his actions. Álex Pina said “When I imagined the scene where the Professor talks about the weakest, the losers, and the need to resist, it seemed obvious to me to accompany it with Bella Ciao, which is both an epic song and a heady ritornello. Since I could not anticipate the success of the series, the effect it has had on Bella Ciao’s popularity is beyond me. (…) We’ve brought it up to date, but that doesn’t mean it has lost any of its symbolic value.”.

Rain of tickets
The Professor decides to reveal himself to the world and asks the population to rise up to help them liberate Rio. The square is the Spanish equivalent of Piccadilly Circus or Times Square with its giant screens and restructured 21st century pedestrian environment. Initially, the series was to have a completely different name, Los Desahuciados (The Expelled in French).

Santa Maria Del Fiore Cathedral
In a flashback, the Professor meets Berlin in front of this sumptuous cathedral before going to the monastery to study the Bank of Spain robbery. Built between 1296 and 1436, the building has been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1982. On the same square, at number 42, there is a white marble slab in the pavement. It symbolizes the exact spot where, in 1600, a huge golden copper globe weighing nearly 2 tons at the top of the cathedral fell following a storm.

The Bank of Spain
Three years after the mint robbery, the Professor takes up the idea and plan of the Berlin robbery to save Rio. The objective: to infiltrate the Bank of Spain and steal 92 tons of gold. The building in which the robbery took place, the Bank of Spain, is in fact the Nuevos Ministerios complex, which houses the Ministry of Public Works, among other things. This complex was built as part of the Madrid city extension project in 1932. Originally, team members were to be named after planets, not cities. It was Álex Pina who, wearing a “Tokyo” T-shirt, convinced the production.

To prepare the robbery, the Professor gathers his gang at the place where he met Palermo (Rodrigo de la Serna), in this Italian monastery. In fact, it is located in Spain and is dedicated to San Frutos, a hermit who settled on this hill in the 8th century. According to the writings, taking refuge here with his two brothers, the saint, through his kindness, attracted many people, fleeing the Islamic invasion. As the soldiers drew nearer, San Frutos came out, struck the ground with his staff and opened the chasm to block their way. Three “brothers” taking refuge in the mountains and then trying to fight oppression, it reminds us of a certain script. During the first break, Arturo (Enrique Arce) receives a ball and must be sewn up. What is less well known is that the actor was actually sewn up by a real surgeon during this scene.

Temple
Tokyo manages to reach the Professor and explains to him the capture of Rio. He decides to bring her in and summon all the other members to free the young man. Entirely built in wood since 1981, the construction site is still not finished, visitors must even wear a helmet to enter. The pilot of the series was rewritten no less than 52 times before going into production.
