1. Leon’s apartment
Leon (Jean Reno) lives in this New York apartment building with only a green plant for company. Then one day, the young Mathilda (Natalie Portman) enters. Located in the Carnegie Hill neighborhood, this typical 1920 building has six floors for a total of twenty-five apartments. Written by Luc Besson, Leon is a great success on both sides of the Atlantic. Thanks to this success, the filmmaker was able to launch the production of The Fifth Element.

Locating Norman Stansfield (Gary Oldman), the corrupt agent responsible for the murder of his family, Mathilda (Natalie Portman) follows him to his job with the aim of assassinating him. In reality, the Manhattan Municipal Building does not house the offices of the DEA but the municipal services of New York City. With a height of 580-foot and an area of 1 million square feet, it is one of the largest administrative buildings in the world. Nearly 2,000 people work there every day.

3. Roosevelt Island Tramway

Symbolically leaving her criminal life behind, Mathilda takes this cable car to return to school. The Queensboro Bridge was introduced in 1976 as an interim solution until a subway station could be opened on Roosevelt Island. When it became operational in 1989, the inhabitants mobilized to preserve it.

It is from a rooftop and armed with a rifle, that Mathilda is initiated by Leon (Jean Reno) to her trade. With a fake ball, it hits a man jogging just after he has passed under this historic 1861 Central Park feature. This is one of the last cast iron bridges in the park.

5. Times Square

In one of the last scenes, Mathilda crosses Times Square at night carrying Leon’s plant in her arms.
