Village
Never named in the script, the island of the lost city took place, in reality, in the Dominican Republic. The set of the film consists of a collage of different places like Altos de Chavon, a major tourist site. A recreation of a 16th century Mediterranean village, Altos de Chavon offered all the scope needed by directors Aaron and Adam Nee for their first big production. They used both the central square, where Loretta Sage (Sandra Bullock) and Alan Caprison (Channing Tatum) dance during a well-deserved moment of calm, but also the houses, where the characters stay and relax while waiting to dive right back into the action. Many scenes were also produced in the Pinewood Studios branch in the Dominican Republic.
Initially approached to play the role finally assigned to Channing Tatum, Ryan Reynolds was to reunite with Sandra Bullock, with whom he had collaborated in the 2009 romantic comedy, The Proposal. However, an agreement could not be reached and the producers opted for another solution. The Lost Cityis a remake in disguise of the 1984 classic Romancing the Stone by Robert Zemeckis. A feature film that has already been the subject of a sequel entitled The Jewel of the Nile, directed by Lewis Teague in 1985 with also Michael Douglas, Kathleen Turner and Danny DeVito.
The Lost City had an estimated budget of between $68 and $74 million.
Altos de Chavón
A very popular tourist attraction in the Dominican Republic, Altos de Chavon is a reconstruction of a 16th century Mediterranean-style village.
Altos de Chavon is located in the town of La Romana. The site includes several buildings, a cultural center, an archaeological museum and an amphitheater. Designed by Italian architect Roberto Copa and industrialist Charles Bluhdorn, Altos de Chavon opened its doors in August 1982. Its 5,000-seat amphitheater has hosted numerous concerts such as those by the Pet Shop Boys, Frank Sinatra and Julio Churches.
