Typewriter and Calculator Museum

Movie Populaire (2012)
A film often needs extras. For Populaire, one of them was on a shelf of the typewriter and calculator museum in Montmorillon...

“She sucks at everything, but when she types she is fast, powerful and focused, you’ll see!”

Louis Échard (Romain Duris)

Rose Pamphyle (Déborah François) can count on the almost unwavering support of her boss and mentor, Louis Échard (Romain Duris), to become the fastest typist in the world.

Participating in various regional, national and world competitions, Rose Pamphyle is not the only star of these tournaments. A very discreet extra sits on a table not far away, a certain Olympia.

The latter is a typewriter from the personal collection of Jeanne Sala. A former outstanding typist, she opened the typewriter and calculator museum in Montmorillon in 2008. For the filming of Populaire, she agreed to lend one of her gleaming machines to blend into the 1950s setting.

Invited on the shooting, Jeanne Sala was moved to find the atmosphere of these very popular contests at the time. The frenzy of the various competitors, the smell of ink in the early morning and the incessant clicking of fingers hitting the mechanical letters of the machines transported the museum curator. An experience that touched her very much.

Déborah François was chosen among 150 auditioned actresses.

Le musée de la Machine à Écrire et à Calculer

Opened in 2008, le musée de la Machine à Écrire et à Calculer is a real trip back in time when these splendid machines were the standard of the service sector.

Nearly 200 typewriters invite the visitors to a dive from 1833 to 1980. Unusual, imposing, in remarkable condition, the machines in this unique museum come in part from the collection of Jeanne Sala, a former typing teacher.
