Todds Steakhouse
It’s hard to guess that the dining hall where everyone in Silver Lake meets to eat is actually a fancy restaurant on Waterton Lake near Calgary. It is indeed at the Lakeside Chophouse that the teams of the showrunners Neil Druckmann and Craig Mazin settled to shoot several sequences of the eighth episode of the first season of The Last of Us.
A shooting all fire and brimstone
While some shots were wrapped at the Lakeside Chophouse, whose bay window appears notably on screen, production designer John Paino also built an alternate version of the restaurant with his crew, in a different environment, to allow Craig Mazin to shoot with more freedom during the interior shots. The fact that in the end the building would be consumed by fire also required that we be able to work from a temporary set and not an actual restaurant.
Playing with time
Episode 8 was also produced in Okotoks, Alberta, in early 2022. A place where the teams installed fake trees, snow and grass to film from February 7 to 12, in an area closed to the public. As always, the HBO channel was keen to solicit local businesses to support the economy and at the same time ensure the collaboration of the locals. Craig Mazin subsequently filmed in Waterton Lakes National Park from February 14 to 18, both at the Lakeside Chophouse and elsewhere.
535 shots from season 1 of the series were digitally altered.
Lakeside Chophouse & Wine Bar
This establishment not only offers fine dining but also a breathtaking view of the Waterton Lakes and the Rocky Mountains.
Chef Brian Long has reigned over the kitchen at Todds Steakhouse for over 17 years, ensuring the establishment an undeniable reputation. The restaurant is also the only one located on the edge of Waterton Lake. It regularly organizes concerts and events.
