The New Burlesque, a show of six American artists, five women and one man, performs on a theater stage. While attempting a comeback in France after a mysterious exile in the United States, Joachim Zand (Mathieu Amalric) decides to launch this tour in major cities of the Atlantic arc. After Le Havre, Saint-Nazaire and La Rochelle, Rochefort welcomes the show of its young and beautiful women.
For the scenes of the show, Mathieu Amalric, actor and also director, chooses the beautiful theater of the Golden Cup in Rochefort. This municipal theater is a beautiful Italian-style theater inaugurated in 1769. A setting contrasting with the bare numbers of the six burlesque artists.
The scenes where New Burlesque performs were filmed in almost real conditions with a real audience. Each time, between 500 and 700 spectators attend the acts free of charge. In return, they give up their image rights.
The film’s soundtrack is a compilation of tracks. It lasts 37 minutes 55.
Théâtre de la Coupe d'Or
Built between 1766 and 1769, the Théâtre de la Coupe d’Or has been listed as a historical monument since 1969.
It is to Pierre-André Hèbre de Saint-Clément, then mayor of Rochefort, that the inhabitants owe the construction of this beautiful Italian-style theater. However, the building soon proved too expensive to maintain and was sold to the municipality in 1852 in an advanced state of disrepair. Lavishly renovated, it regained its superb appearance. In 1971, another renovation campaign transformed its hall into a true architectural treasure modelled on the Queen’s theater of the Petit Trianon in Versailles. Today, it hosts plays and shows.
