Statue of Marianne
The adventures ofAdèle Blanc-Sec needed a good ending, and it’s done with Le bébé des Buttes-Chaumont. Tenth and final volume of the fantastico-historical saga of Jacques Tardi, this volume takes place in Paris as the previous publications. More specifically, Place de la République, where the statue of Marianne is located.
Adèle Blanc-Sec and the mysteries of Paris
It was in 1976 that readers discovered the first plates ofAdèle Blanc-Sec in Adèle et la bête. Two years earlier, Jacques Tardi published Adieu Brindavoine, a recurring character in his flagship series.
Adèle Blanc-Sec, orphan of mother and father, is a writer of popular novels. The success of his writings are important especially during the First World War.
She lives fantastic adventures in the Paris of the beginning of the XXth century. Strange creatures populate the capital. She digs and puts her nose everywhere to raise mysteries.
Paris, the other character of the series
Jacques Tardi walks his heroine here and there in the streets of Paris. He loves the capital, that of the years between the two wars. For his first adventure, the author of It was trench warfareconcentrates his plot in the National Museum of Natural History. Adele is surprised at home by a pterodactyl.
In the following albums, the plates sublimate Paris. The pages of Jacques Tardi summon the Eiffel Tower, the Pont neuf, the Catacombs, the Invalides, the Lion of Belfort, the Gare de Lyon, the Père-Lachaise cemetery, the sewers, the Samaritaine or the Buttes-Chaumont park, as the title of this latest opus emphasizes.
The documented and accurate capital
Everything is precise and well documented in Jacques Tardi’s albums. The Buttes-Chaumont baby is no exception to the rule, as in his other series Nestor Burma, a comic strip version of the novels by Léo Mallet and Le cri du peuple based on the novel by Jean Vautrin. The atmosphere as well as the streets and monuments of Paris are faithfully reconstituted. He has an impressive collection of books of Paris from all periods in his studio in Ménilmontant used for the decorations of his albums.
“The scouting is very important: I walk around, I want to use such a perspective, such a building, pleasant to draw, but useful to the plot.”, confides the artist to Agence France Presse.
The statue of Marianne, place de la République
Patmosis, ancient mummy, takes leave of her friend Adèle to go to the hotel Sekhemre Herouhermaât Antef VII. His driver passes in front of the statue of Marianne, place de la République.
Lover of the beautiful, as were the Egyptian arts, he castigates this monument, finding it ugly. Erected in 1883, this statue is the work of Léopold Morice. Despite this prestigious name, the statue does not find favor in his eyes.
10 of der
Le bébé des Buttes-Chaumont is the last album of the series. Jacques Tardi thus completes his work begun in 1976. He had announced it long ago. He did not want to go beyond a tenth part. As the last page forcefully underlines: “Thus ends, forever, the Extraordinary Adventures of Adele Blanc-Sec. Beware of counterfeiters who might be tempted to follow up! ! !” The author of Moi, René Tardi, prisoner of war in Stalag II-B does not want his heroine to continue her adventures without him.
Adèle Blanc-Sec continues her journey through Dominique Grange, singer and companion of Jacques Tardi, with the song Immortelle Adèle.
Adèle Blanc-Sec is about 25 years old in the first album.
Place de la République
The Place de la République covers the 3rd, 10th and 11th arrondissements of Paris.
With a surface area of 3.4 hectares, the Place de la République was named on May 7, 1789. Previously known as Place du Château-d’Eau, it was redeveloped in the 1880s.
A monumental statue stands in its center. Representing Marianne, this 9.50 m high sculpture is supported by a base where allegories of Liberty, Equality and Fraternity are visible.
This square is also a place of gathering during demonstrations of the left.
