Artist Jacques Tardi

Jacques Tardi is a French illustrator and comic book writer born in Valence in 1946.

After studying at the Fine Arts School in Lyon and at the School of Decorative Arts in Pairs, Jacques Tardi worked on short stories for the magazine Pilote from 1970.

Adieu Brindavoine in 1976 opened the door to the First World War, for which he produced some magnificent albums: C’était la guerre des tranchées, Putain de guerre ! and Le der des ders.

The same year, he published the first adventure of Adèle Blanc-Sec, a young investigator in the 1910s.

From 1982, he adapted Léo Mallet’s novels, Nestor Burma, the private detective in the 1940s.

He also worked on scripts by Jean-Patrick Manchette (Griffu), Jean-Claude Forest (Ici même), Jean Vautrin (Le cri du peuple), Didier Daeninckx (Varlot soldat) or Daniel Pennac (La débauche).

He has also illustrated books by Céline (Voyage au bout de la nuit, Féerie pour une autre fois).

In 1985, he received the prestigious Angoulême Grand Prix and entered the Will Eisner Hall of Fame in 2016.
