“The poor widow sold the pharmacy, located in the Grand’rue de l’Houmeau, the main suburb of Angouleme.”

The narrator, from the novel Lost Delusions (Honoré de Balzac)

The Chardon family moved to number 165 rue de Paris in Angoulême. After a change in numbering, the old house is now located at 141. The father, a pharmacist, set up his pharmacy on the first floor of the building.

The father of the future Lucien de Remburpé spent his life searching for a cure for gout. Knowing that it is a disease of the rich, he intends to make a fortune by selling his medicine to them. He died trying to submit his project to the Academy of Sciences in Paris, leaving his family in need. It is important to note that he wanted Lucien and his sister to have a good education and that his family would have a certain standing. Thus, the meager revenues of the pharmacy went into these expenses.

For several years, at the address of the building, a pharmacy was present in real life held by Dominique Terriere. It has not existed for some time.

300

When her husband died, Mrs. Chardon sold the pharmacy and built up an annuity of 300 francs.
