Pentos

TV show House of the Dragon (2022)
Ten years have passed since the marriage of Rhaenyra Targaryen (Milly Alcock/Emma D'Arcy) and Laenor Velaryon (Theo Nate/John Mcmillan). Daemon Targaryen (Matt Smith) is now married to Laena Velaryon (Nanna Blondell) and has two daughters. The family is housed far from King's Landing, in Pentos, in a castle.

“You laud the virtues of Pentos, but you have no interest in it.”

Laena Velaryon (Nanna Blondell)

Set at Leavesden Studios near London, where the Harry Potter franchise was once filmed, the production of House of the Dragon also made use of many natural sites. In great demand, Spain allowed the location team to find the castle of La Calohorra to create the Pentos mansion where Daemon Targaryen (Matt Smith) and his wife Laena Velaryon (Nanna Blondell) make their home.

Dragons in Spain

Many sequences were shot outside the castle, notably on the roof, but the majority of the interiors were filmed in studio sets in England. This is not the first time that characters from the Game of Thrones universe have visited this region. David Benioff and D.B. Weiss had in their time shot many sequences notably related to the history of Daenerys Targaryen (Emilia Clarke) in Andalusia and in the desert regions of southern Spain.

A little known historical monument

Isolated and remarkably preserved, the castle of La Calahorra did not require any specific development to shine on the screen. A new place in the Game of Thrones Universe, inhabited by two monumental dragons. The scene of one of the most heartbreaking scenes of the second part of season 1.

House of the Dragon is actually the second spin-off to be released by HBO. The first one, set thousands of years before Game of Thrones, was stopped after the pilot episode was shot.

Calahorra Castle

A treasure of Andalusia, this 15th century castle sits enthroned on a hill, dominating the surroundings with a certain presence.

Built at the foot of the Sierra Nevada between 1509 and 1512, this remarkably well-preserved castle was declared a Site of Cultural Interest in 1922. In Italian Renaissance style, it is one of the most historically important sites in the province of Granada. It is currently owned by a private individual and is occasionally used for filming.
