Penny Lane

Music Penny Lane The Beatles (1967)
"Penny Lane, is in my ears and in my eyes." A timeless Beatles hit, Penny Lane refers to an actual street and neighborhood in Liverpool that is now forever linked to the history of the Fab Four. One of the most cult and visited avenues in the world, here celebrated by Paul McCartney.

Penny Lane is in my ears and in my eyes.

The Beatles

Paul McCartney writes and composes Penny Lane while John Lennon works on Strawberry Field Forever. The two songs evoke two well-known places in the city of Liverpool. Already mentioned in In My Life by John Lennon, Penny Lane is the subject of a formal visit by Paul McCartney, who takes the opportunity to pay tribute to the neighborhood where his comrade lived.

A visit in due form

In Penny Lane, Paul McCartney evokes several places and people such as the hairdresser, passers-by, a banker and a fireman busy cleaning his truck, a picture of the Queen in his pocket. John Lennon simply slipped a little saucy hint of his own into the phrase “four fish and finger pies“. This verse refers without too much detour to a sexual practice.

A street in a box

At Abbey Road Studios in London, the Beatles met to record Penny Lane. It includes parts for flute, oboe, horn, double bass and even a piccolo trumpet solo played by English classical musician David Mason. For the occasion, the four boys in the wind even shoot a video clip on February 5 and 7, 1967. Clip present on the reissue of the album 1 in 2015 and broadcast at the time in the American program Hollywood Palace, February 25, 1967.

Geographic rock and roll

If the song is part of the sessions of the album Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band, he finally found himself on the track-list of the American version of Magical Mystery Tour. In Liverpool, all the Penny Lane signs have been covered with the attention of fans from all over the world for many years. The barber shop, the fire station and even the shelter in the middle of the traffic circle, all mentioned in the song, also get a definite thumbs up.

If credited Lennon/McCartney, Penny Lane is the work of Paul McCartney alone.

Penny Lane

This famous street in Liverpool, England inspired John Lennon and Paul McCartney to write one of the most famous Beatles songs.

Once considered a rural thoroughfare, Penny Lane was named at the time of Liverpool’s expansion from the turn of the 20th century. While for a long time the name Penny Lane referred, for many people, to James Penny, an 18th century slave trader, extensive research conducted at the time of the protests following the death of George Floyd in June 2020, has proved that it was not. The street currently runs through one of Liverpool’s most desirable areas.
