“The records we’re making now are definitely different now to the ones we probably thought we would be making when we started out – actually, we didn’t think we’d be even making records anymore..”

Alex Turner (singer, guitarist of Arctic Monkeys)

Although the Arctic Monkeys were born in Sheffield, England, their music, like that of their illustrious elders the Beatles and the Rolling Stones, soon resonated with a growing audience in the United States. A country that Alex Turner’s band has chosen for the picture supposed to illustrate their seventh studio opus.

Car story

No special preparation was needed to give birth to the shot of this lone car, a white Toyota Corolla, parked on the roof of a parking lot at the Historic Core in Los Angeles. It is to the drummer Matt Helders that the group owes this photo for the least unusual. Photo captured with a Leica M6 film camera. This gives it a decidedly vintage patina, even though the session did take place in our time.

Motorized monkeys

Organizing the meeting of several musical styles, somewhere between pop lounge, funk, jazz and electronic music, The Car is articulated around several themes including the automobile. That’s why the group chose the photo of this car on top of a building. A cliché with an almost post-apocalyptic character, which Arctic Monkeys wanted to put forward, proving that by combining their strengths, the members could not only manage their music but also their visual identity.

Four years have passed between Tranquility Base Hotel and Casino, the Arctic Monkeys’ previous album, and The Car.

7th Street & South Broadway

Located south of Pershing Square in the Historic Core, this parking lot marks the intersection of 7th Street and South Broadway.

Several restaurants occupy the ground floor of this car park, such as KFC and Carl’s Jr. Accessible 24 hours a day, it has 7 levels, one of which is open. Particularly rich in theaters and shops, the district adjoins that of Skid Row, namely one of the poorest in Los Angeles. The GRAMMY Museum LA Live is just a few blocks west.
