The narrator

Born near Saigon in 1914, Marguerite Duras took her first steps in this country colonized by France. Having to join her high school in Saigon, the young woman takes the ferry and crosses this gigantic river that is the Mekong. Its power fascinates her. Mekong River

The Mekong River is the tenth largest river in the world and the fourth largest in Asia after the Yangtze River, the Ganges-Brahmaputra River and the Yenisei River. It is traditionally called the “River of Nine Dragons” in Vietnam.

More than 70 million people depend on the Mekong. Used for irrigation, fishing, fish farming, hydroelectric production, transportation of goods and water supply for industries and individuals, the river even has an international commission, the Mekong Committee, established in 1995 to manage crises related to it between the different countries using its waters.

In addition to the economic aspects, the Committee ensures the good practices of sustainable development of the river.
