“Back to the past”

Jérémie (Marin Lafitte)

Following the Code Lyoko animated series created in 2003, Code Lyoko Evolution tells the continuation of the adventures of Jérémie (Marin Lafitte), Aelita (Léonie Berthonnaud), Yumi (Mélanie Tran), Ulrich (Quentin Merabet), Odd (Gulliver Bevernaege-Benhadj) and William (Diego Mestanza) in their fight against Xana.

The major difference with the original series is that the sequences in the real world are in live action, as opposed to 2D animation. After the closing of the season 4 of Code Lyoko and seeing the success of the series, Christophe and Benoît Sabatino, the executive producers, are thinking about giving a sequel while innovating. That’s when the idea of shooting live action became obvious.

As in previous seasons, the group of friends study at Kadic College in the Paris region. In the animation series, the design of the school is modelled on the Lycée Lakanal in Paris. Not wishing to shoot in Paris, the teams decided to come to Angoulême since the 3D part of the series was historically made at Antéfilms studios in Charente. The Guez de Balzac high school was therefore used for the exterior scenes.

7 000 000

The Code Lyoko Evolution series had a budget of more than 7 000 000€.

Guez De Balzac High School

The oldest secondary school in Angoulême and its surrounding area, the Guez de Balzac high school is also a historical monument thanks to its neo-classical architecture.

Named after the writer Jean-Louis Guez de Balzac, a former student of the high school when it was still a Jesuit school, the establishment dates from the 16th century. Personalities such as Armand Fallières, president of the Third Republic, the writers Jean Tharaud and Jérôme Tharaud and the resistance fighter René Chabasse attended the school. It also houses a collection of natural sciences and another dedicated to physics instruments. He encouraged the creation of the association of the friends of the heritage of Guez, founded in 2003 to enhance the architectural heritage of the school.
