John Lennon's childhood home

Music Julia The Beatles (1968)
Moving song evoking John Lennon's mother, Julia is part of the mythical White Album of the Beatles. A song in the form of a painful return to the past of a musician with multiple cracks who lived within the walls of a house in Liverpool now visited by millions of fans.

“When I cannot sing my heart, I can only speak my mind.”

John Lennon

John Lennon spent most of his childhood in his Aunt Mimi’s house at 251 Menlove Avenue in Liverpool. Of all the Beatles, he had the most comfortable life, in contrast to Ringo Starr, whose house was in one of the most run-down areas of the city. This is where John Lennon lived when he learned of the death of his mother Julia Stanley in 1958. A mother to whom he pays tribute in the song Julia.

Vibrant evocation

In 1968, John Lennon and the other Beatles reside in Rishikesh, India, to attend the classes of Maharishi Mahesh Yogi. The musician Donovan accompanies them. One day, John Lennon approaches the latter to ask for his help. His goal was, as Donovan reported, “to write a song about the childhood I never really had with my mother. “Referring to one of John Lennon’s favorite books, Alice in Wonderland, the song did not require the involvement of any other Beatle. It is the only one that John Lennon recorded solo within the Beatles, answering to Paul McCartney, who was more used to it.

Back to childhood

Between two evocations to his mother, John Lennon takes advantage of this piece to speak about the chosen one of his heart, Yoko Ono. Later, Julia is used in the bold mix of the album Love. A composition that John Lennon’s fans remember when they visit his childhood home at 251 Menlove Avenue in Liverpool.

Although credited to Lennon/McCartney, Julia is a John Lennon composition.

251 Menlove Ave

Nicknamed Mendips, the childhood home of John Lennon belongs, like that of Paul McCartney, to the National Trust.

Located at 251 Menlove Avenue, in a comfortable district of Liverpool, this pretty two-storey house was built in the 1930s. It was here that John Lennon came to live, with his aunt Mimi, from 1945. In 1963, the Beatle left places to enjoy the benefits of its success. Bought by Yoko Ono in 2002, then offered by the latter to the National Trust, the house has been completely renovated in the style of the 1950s. It is now open to the public. She also gave her name to John Lennon’s second posthumous album and is featured on the cover of Oasis’ single Live Forever.
