Island of Bourgines
During his seven months as an expatriate in Angoulême between 1939 and 1940, Boris Vian had fun with his friends, especially Alfred Jabès. With their other companions Jacques Demaux and Francis Jones, as well as the few girls who join them, they discover Angoulême and its wonders.
Their favorite vacation spot is the island of Bourgines. Even today, the small stretch of land is the center of Angoulême’s leisure activities. 80 years ago, Boris Vian and his band bathed there, went for a canoe ride, waiting for time to pass. It was a gloomy time because the Second World War was at France’s doorstep and Alfred Jabès was probably one of the only people to grasp its gravity at the time. Boris Vian himself wrote it later, in 1951, in his diary: “Jabès appalled me. I understood: fucked, Germans, etc. I understood nothing at all, I just understood that something was breaking. In the afternoon I left Angoulême. On June 8, I think on my ride…”.
Boris Vian died in 1959 at the age of 39 following a heart attack.
Île de Bourgines
Located north of downtown Angoulême, the île de Bourgines is a tourist, cultural and sporting place.
The île de Bourgines is home to the Aviron Club d’Angoulême and the Canoe Kayak Club. From time to time, the 700m2 expanse is also used as a concert venue as during the Festival des Musiques Métisses.
Before 2000, a three-star camping site and a youth hostel occupied a major part of the site. Today, the site has been transformed into a public garden.
