House of the Byers
Originally, brothers Matt and Ross Duffer, the creators of Stranger Things, wanted to set the action around Long Island, but the rather cold climate made that difficult. It was then that the production opted for the Atlanta area. Not only does Screen Gems Studios offer the opportunity to develop all the interior sets, but the surroundings lend themselves well to the “construction” of the fictional town of Hawkins, with lots of wooded areas and small villages. The cost of shooting in Georgia is also much more affordable than in California. Production begins in November 2015 around Jackson, the city chosen to form the core of Hawkins. The team turns the Georgia Mental Health Institute into a laboratory and moves to Patrick Henry High School in Stockbridge. Several houses are selected to house the characters. The most important one, the one in which young Will Byers (Noah Schnapp) disappears, is in a rather wild area, far from the main roads. The owners willingly accepted the producers’ proposal and several exterior shots were taken. However, no parts are exploited. The living room where Joyce Byers (Winona Ryder) hangs the string lights to communicate with her son stuck in the Upside-Down world, is thus created in the studio.
Later, the success of the series around the world encouraged many fans to travel to visit the filming locations. At the Byers’ house, this celebrity was not welcome and the owners quickly asked that their address no longer be mentioned, not wishing to make their home a tourist stop. Fortunately, if it is not advisable to try to go to 149 Coastline Road in Fayetteville, it is possible to immerse yourself in the atmosphere of this worrying house thanks to the set that Lego has dedicated to the series. A pop-up store has even opened in the heart of Manhattan. A store where the famous salon has been reproduced, down to the smallest detail.
More than 1000 children auditioned for the series.
149 Coastline Rd
A modest wooden house surrounded by forest, 149 Coastline Road in Fayetteville embodies the very essence of the cult series Stranger Things.
This house is accessed by a road that is more of a dirt road. With a large garden and a porch, it is in keeping with the architectural style of the region. Located a few kilometers south of Atlanta, it is also on the edge of downtown Fayetteville, a city developed in 1822 around cotton plantations. The oldest courthouse in the state is located here as well as the home of the descendants of the famous Western hero, Doc Holliday. That said, the city remains popular today thanks to the film and television studios in which many works are shot.
