House of Dambreuse
Jean-Claude Brialy, 28, agrees to play the lead role in the film adaptation of L’Éducation sentimentale, the masterpiece by Gustave Flaubert, alongside Marie-José Nat, Michel Auclair, Dawn Addams and Carla Marlier. The latter playing Barbara, a young model with whom the provincial will establish relations. Although the action is supposed to take place in Paris, director Alexandre Astruc chose to shoot mostly in the domain of the Château de Saint-Brice, a few kilometers from Cognac.
Well located, close to all amenities, immersed in the heart of a sublime park, the castle of Saint-Brice becomes the house of the Dambreuses, where Frédéric Moreau’s character will get his sentimental education. A place full of history, having evolved on the margins of the conflicts that have enamelled the country over the centuries, beautifully preserved. Here, Alexandre Astruc’s team has all the necessary amplitude to work, whether inside or outside. Therefore, no major changes are required to bring the place to life. This one becoming little by little a protagonist in its own right of the feature film.
The film is the first film adaptation of Gustave Flaubert’s novel L’Éducation sentimentale.
Château de Saint-Brice
Le château de Saint-Brice is located in the commune of the same name in Charente.
Built in the 14th century on the right bank of the Charente, this beautiful private residence cannot be visited but can be seen from a boat on the river.
Queen Elizabeth of England stopped here in 1980.
