“It’s like when you have a dream and you can’t remember it unless you think really hard.”

Will Byers (Noah Schnapp)

Hawkins Woods holds a special place in the plot of the first season of Stranger Things. It is indeed in the middle of these disturbing trees, some of which seem to have a will of their own, that Jim Hopper (David Harbour), Joyce Byers (Winona Ryder) and the children search for Will (Noah Schnapp) after his disappearance.

Originally planned to take place in the Long Island area, the production of Stranger Things is taking place in Atlanta, around Screen Gem Studios, where some of the interior sets are built. Nevertheless, the city and its surroundings offer showrunners Matt and Ross Duffer excellent opportunities. The Georgia International Horse Park for example, where the mountain bike, horseback riding and pentathlon events took place during the 1996 Olympic Games, allows the directors to stage the research sequences of young Will.

The filming of these scenes justified the sealing off of the entire area. The locals, quite happy to see their favorite walking spot featured in a hit series, welcomed the young actors in the cast. Stranger Things has contributed to the popularity of not only the town, but the entire region, resulting in a constant influx of tourists. A success that is sometimes a little invasive but nevertheless welcome from an economic point of view.

Winona Ryder, one of the main actresses, has also benefited from the extraordinary fame of the series. The actress was a star in the 1980s and 1990s thanks to films such as Edward Scissorhands, Beetlejuice, Dracula and Little Women, but her popularity has been boosted by Stranger Things and her role as a brave mother.

Although the entire plot revolves around Will Byers, Noah Schnapp, his interpreter, only joined the main credits of Stranger Things at the beginning of season 2.

Georgia International Horse Park

This park, used as part of the Summer Olympics in 1996, has grown significantly over the following years.

First used to treat wastewater, this park later hosted the horse-riding, mountain biking and pentathlon events of the Olympic Games. Very popular with locals and tourists, the whole area has also encouraged the municipality to build a space dedicated to concerts, where many artists have performed, such as The Allman Brothers, Foo Fighters, The Offspring, Me First and the Gimme Gimmes or Goo Goo Dolls again. The park also hosts sporting events.
