Harry's
Caricature of the traders populating the financial district of New York, Patrick Bateman likes nothing more than to scour the greatest restaurants and take care of his appearance. When he began writing American Psycho, Bret Easton Ellis was already, by his own admission, rich and famous. Like his previous publications, the book contains many autobiographical elements. The author takes pleasure in making his protagonist the archetype of the greedy yuppie. Patrick is rich, obsessed with sex and drugs, a fan of 1980s rock and incidentally capable of cutting people up with a chainsaw. A cold-blooded killer wearing a mask that allows him to evolve incognito in the fauna of Wall Street and to go to the most beautiful restaurants without arousing suspicion. Places like Harry’s, on Hanover Street, where Patrick Bateman often returns.
Harry’s, the meeting place for traders
In reality, every day of the week, Harry’s seems to be frequented by several Patrick Batemans. Bret Easton Ellis’s trader is a synthesis of all those workers in suits who handle numbers all year long. The use of such a location gave American Psycho its disturbing realism. An aspect partly responsible for the rejection of the project by the publisher Simon & Schuster. The latter found it much too violent and preferred to lose his $300,000 advance. The writer was not discouraged and his manuscript found a buyer, becoming his best-seller. The book responsible for an even greater fame that the novelist exorcised in the terrifying Glamorama…
Patrick Bateman, the main character of American Psycho, has a brother. The latter, named Sean, is the central protagonist of the novel The Rules of Attraction.
Harry's
An iconic bar in the financial district frequented by the Wall Street elite, Harry’s has been quenching the thirst of the powerful since 1972.
Harry’s is located in the basement of the India House, on Hanover Street. It was here that the New York Cotton Exchange, the first commodities exchange in the United States, was established in 1851.
Today, the India House is a listed historical monument in the city, thanks to its Italian Renaissance style façade.
Traders come here every day to enjoy Harry’s cocktails and specialties. The all-you-can-eat champagne brunch is a must, as is the Tomahawk Chop, an impressive piece of meat priced at $165.
