Ruth Slater (Sandra Bullock)
The character of Ruth Slater, played by a sober Sandra Bullock, lives in Seattle, in the northeastern United States. The film often shows views of the city, whose skyline is marked by the iconic Space Needle tower. However, the filming of The Unforgivable did not take place in the streets of the former bastion of grunge music, but further north in Canada, in the city of Vancouver. This is where Netflix, after injecting $500 million into content production, now shoots a majority of its productions.
Prior to filming, the location team chose to use Chapel Arts, a real art gallery and carpentry workshop, to shoot the sequences in which Ruth Slater exercises her construction skills. A way to use existing settings without the need to make them up to make them look believable on screen.
Several important scenes were filmed inside the Chapel Arts. This is where Ruth works and sleeps from time to time, between hammering and planing doors. A key sequence with Jon Bernthal also takes place within these walls. A place that can be visited in real life and where the memory of this dramatic film by one of Hollywood’s greatest stars lives on.
The filming of The Unforgivable was interrupted for more than 5 months due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Located in Vancouver’s historic Railtown district, The Chapel Arts is an exploration and experimentation between art and design. Working exclusively with local wood, the workshop’s artisans create tables, staircases, and all sorts of chairs, benches and armchairs, all the while giving their creations a resolutely design and trendy edge. Characterized by its high standards, The Chapel Arts also showcases a know-how and a heritage in perpetual motion. The complex includes a showroom, a boutique and a workshop. The building itself was once a chapel, before becoming a funeral home.
