“The Fanzinothèque is an association whose primary mission is to bring together different fanzines from France, Europe, and even the world.”

Virginie Lyobard, director of the fanzine library (Interview France 3 Nouvelle-Aquitaine)

The Fanzinothèque de Poitiers is a unique place in France, in Europe and in the world. It is a special library preserving and highlighting fanzines. With over 50,000 documents, it is the first of its kind in the world.

In 1977, the non-profit association L’oreille boldie founded Le confort moderne, rue du faubourg du pont-neuf. It is in this alternative place that exhibition spaces, concert halls and the fanzine library are gathered.

Today, the association has four employees, including a curator and documentalists. Indeed, this place functions like a media library with employees and members. Researchers from all over the world come to consult special fanzines. Subscribers can borrow documents. Visitors can read on site without being members.

The word fanzine is a contraction of fan and magazine. They are linked to the development of the counter-cultures of the 1970s. In the shelves, you can find fanzines about alternative music but also about comics. Thus, among these, we can consult issues of Coq Hardi, Chacal Puant, Sapristi, Hop, Abus dangereux and Schtroumpfanzine. This small publication is directed by Jacques Glénat, the future owner of Glénat Editions, from 1976 until 1979. On 12 photocopied A4 sheets, the summary includes illustrations, interviews, lists of upcoming albums and brief reviews.

La Fanzinotheque

With more than 50,000 documents, the Fanzinothèque is the most important special fanzine library in the world.

In 1977, the association L’oreille boldie was created. Eight years later, it founded the Confort moderne in Poitiers, a counter-culture venue with exhibition halls, concert halls and the fanzine library.

Run as a media library with employees, members and visitors, it preserves and highlights fanzines from all over the world, amateur, non-commercial publications made by one or more people. They developed in the 1970s around comics and music.

In this cosy place made of wood and comfortable sofas, one can consult an online catalogue of digitised fanzines, use the printing lab and an exhibition area. There is even a fanzionobus that travels around the Vienne or to cultural events.
