City Hall

Movie Blanche and Marie Jacques Renard (1984)
The Allies have won the war! In the village square, the inhabitants welcomed the British and American troops and celebrated their newfound freedom around the Resistance fighters who had worked for the victory. A sequence shot in front of the town hall of Matha in Charente.

Marie (Sandrine Bonnaire)

Blanche et Marie may be set in the north of France, but director Jacques Renard is based in the Angoulême region of Charente. The hairdresser’s salon run by Germinal, played by Patrick Chesnais, accompanied by his daughter Marie (Sandrine Bonnaire) is located on rue Gambetta, opposite the Matha town hall.

It is therefore logical that the filmmaker organized the conclusion of his film in front of this same town hall, when the British and the Americans finally liberate the city, in a necessarily festive atmosphere. The inhabitants of Matha literally went back in time during the shooting of Blanche et Marie. Numerous decorations, such as British and American flags, were hung in the streets while the production parked period vehicles in its arteries.

Filmed in 1984, Blanche et Marie tells an important part of French history. A large-scale production that transformed a small village in the Charente into a northern city. The period re-enactment was a real event for the locals. Some of them also participated in the shooting as extras.

Commune de Matha

Several times renovated, the town hall of Matha is a historical monument. It is located on a small square in the center of the village.

Having played a role during the Hundred Years’ War, Matha has now regained its tranquility and offers a quality of life to which many townspeople turn. Although it is not listed as a historical monument, unlike the châtelet, the church of Saint-Hérie or the church of Saint-Pierre de Marestay, the town hall also tells a story linked to that of the region.
