“What were you doing at that time, in that part of town? Going for a walk?! Ha! Ha! Ha! You were walking… Of course. But, do you know that this is not a good place to walk at night?!?”

The policeman, excerpt from Journal 3 by Fabrice Neaud

After his violent attack in the middle of the night near the Saint-Pierre cathedral, Fabrice Neaud decided to file a complaint at the Angoulême police station, place du champs de Mars.

Needless to say, the police officer who received his testimony is cynical. He knows very well that the place where Fabrice is taken to part in the first time is frequented by homosexuals of the city of Valois. This irony is often found in these police locations in the 1990s. Not much more was to be expected from the agents, especially not compassion. Moreover, the author of Journal knows it well, he does not expect anything from it. Worse, he thinks it’s all his fault.

Scenes of verbal or physical aggression are found throughout the first three volumes of this story of Fabrice Neaud, a young gay man in a small provincial town. The chiseled narration and the contribution of dreamlike sequences make Journal one of the best autobiographies drawn to this day. There is a before and after Journal, for readers as well as for authors who are starting out in this literary genre.
