“How does a person go about doing this?”

Augustus Landor (Christian Bale)

The cemetery sequence gave Scott Cooper, director of The Pale Blue Eye, the opportunity to shoot in one of the oldest and largest burial grounds in the United States. A place full of history, covered with a thick layer of snow, perfect to hide the few traces of modernity that could spoil the illusion.

From Queen to Poe

Revelation of the film Sing Street, noticed in Bohemian Rhapsody, Lucy Boynton holds a central role in The Pale Blue Eye. The actress having returned on her experience for the site Collider: “I was really struck by Scott Cooper and Christian Bale’s very conscientious work methods. Christian in particular, during important, intense and potentially risky scenes, always took the time to make sure everyone was okay. Scott, on the other hand, is so attentive. It never bursts the emotional bubble you’re in when you shoot. He leads in an intimate and friendly manner. And when you have two such involved artists with you, the working environment is so fluid, that you are naturally encouraged to get involved too.

A complex character

About her character, Lucy Boynton said: “I found it very easy to sympathize with my character. Same thing when it came to justifying its actions. So as I talked with Scott Cooper, my understanding of the character, this young woman with epilepsy, evolved. I realized who she was before this affliction appeared. (…) He is someone who loves life and has this intensity in it. A kind of electric humming strongly attenuated by a force that she does everything to repel.
