“End of June 1261, in the morning… The thick mist lasciviously surrounding the foothills of Angoulesme is slow to dissipate, barely allowing a glimpse of the walls of the upper city, still silent!”

The narrator in volume 18 of the series Les aigles décapitées

In volume 18 of the series Les aigles décapitées, Erik Arnoux and Michel Pierret make their hero Sigwald de Crozenc travel to Angoulême. The young squire of the house of Lusignan must perfect his training around the handling of weapons.

Thus, a transition plate allows the readers to understand that from now on the action takes place in the city of Valois. A large panoramic box reveals Angoulême at dawn. You can see the medieval wall surrounding the upper town. There are still some vestiges of this enclosure today, called ramparts, and lower than in the vignette drawn by Michel Pierret. The Belgian author has also included St. Peter’s Cathedral. Well preserved, this place of worship was built in the Romanesque style and consecrated in 1128.

The dome of St. Peter’s Cathedral was rebuilt in the 19th century in a Byzantine style.

Angoulême Cathedral

Built between 1100 and 1128, the Angoulême cathedral is a gothic style work built on the ruins of several others.

The current Angoulême cathedral is the fourth to stand on this site. The first one dates from the 4th century, the second from the 6th century and the last one from the 11th century.

Consecrated in 1128, the cathedral has suffered the trials of time and men. Damaged during the wars of Religion, it was registered with the titles of the historical monuments in 1840.
