“The studio told us, “OK guys, this is an Oscar movie.” It was the first time in my life that anyone mentioned the Oscars about something I’d done.”

Peter Farrelly

The first solo dramatic film directed by Peter Farrelly, whose comedies with his brother Bobby, such as Dumb and Dumber and There’s Something About Mary costs were box-office hits in the 1990s, Green Book was written by Nick Vallelonga, the son of Tony Vallelonga, aka Tony Lip, the character played by Viggo Mortensen on screen.

This gives the film an authentic character. And as a wink of history, the path of the real Tony Lip brought him to the cinema.

Noticed by Francis Ford Coppola at the Copacabana, where he returned after touring with Shirley, he began his film career playing a wedding guest in the early days of The Godfather and then appeared in Raging Bull, Year of the Dragon, Goodfellas and Donnie Brasco.

Tony Lip also played Carmine Lupertazzi in the series The Sopranos from 2001 to 2007. Focusing on this particular episode in the career of Don Shirley, played on screen by Mahershala Ali, Green Book was a huge hit with audiences and won multiple awards, including three Oscars.

Against the criticisms of the family of the real Don Shirley, his relatives having affirmed that the musician and Tony Lip had never been friends.

Carnegie Hall

Inaugurated in 1891, Carnegie Hall is a very large and beautiful concert hall in New York on 7th Avenue.

A naturalized Scottish American industrialist and philanthropist, Andrew Carnegie decided to finance a theatre in 1890. At the inauguration the following year, an exceptional concert by Piotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky was given there.

The building was designed according to the plans of architect William Tuthill in an Italian Renaissance style. Built in brick and brown stone, it is one of the only large buildings in the Big Apple to be composed without any metal structure.

In 1925, Andrew’s widow sold Carnegie Hall to a real estate developer . Later, in the 1960s, the City of New York bought it and rented it to a non-profit organization under pressure from violinist Isaac Stern. The building was declared a historical monument in 1964, and was completely renovated between 1983 and 1995. Currently, it can accommodate up to 2,804 spectators in its main hall and also has three auditoriums: the Main Hall, the Recital Hall and the Chamber Music Hall.

The concert of the century was given there on May 18, 1976. It brought together the greatest musicians of the time, Isaac Stern, Vladimir Horowitz, Yehudi Menuhin, Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau and Mstislav Rostropovitch. They are accompanied by the New York Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Leonard Bernstein.
