Walk of Atonement
By the admission of everyone involved in the walk of atonement scene, primarily actress Lena Headey, this sequence was as difficult to shoot as it was to watch afterwards. Imagined by the writer George R.R. Martin, this scene is inspired by the punishment inflicted on Jane Shore, the mistress of King Edward IV in 1483. Accused of witchcraft, the young woman had been forced to walk in her underwear in the streets of London under the jeers of the crowd. The novelist having justified his choice thus: “It was a punishment directed at women to break their pride. And Cersei is defined by her pride.. “
A challenging shoot
The Dubrovnik authorities, so far delighted to host a major production like Game of Thrones, have also expressed their displeasure. As the producers began planning the sequence, a local church tried to prevent it from being filmed, citing the town’s “anti-public sexuality” policy. The character of Cersei Lannister (Lena Headey) to be naked during the shooting. The actress also refuses to turn in the simplest device: “the thought of being naked for three days and trying to contain her in the way she would be I think I would feel very angry. I didn’t want to be angry. I don’t think Cersei would be angry.” said Lena Headey a few moments after the broadcast.
An understudy for Cersei Lannister
The producers then hire Rebecca Van Cleave, an understudy. The latter is responsible for walking naked next to the actress. The head of Lena Headey having been “grafted” on her body in post-production. Rebecca Van Cleave and Lena Headey then decide to take a walk along the route and go down the Jesuit Stairs, before reaching places like Stradun and St. Dominic Street. During the shooting itself, the crowd throws eggs and various garbage at the two actresses. The entire team later expressed how difficult the whole process had been. For Rebecca Van Cleave, however, the experience was not without interest, as she later stated, “It was one of the scariest, most wonderful, most gratifying experiences I could have imagined I never in a million years would have thought I would be in Dubrovnik surrounded by hundreds of extras and crew members throwing food at me, but it was amazing. It’s definitely the hardest thing I’ve ever done, but also the best experience of my life. And I hope the next thing I do will have my head in it!“
The role of Cersei Lannister has earned Lena Headey 4 awards.
Church of St. Ignatius
Having served as the setting for one of the most memorable scenes in Game of Thrones, these steps are now a must-see.
Located near the cathedral, the Jesuit staircase leads directly to the Saint-Ignace church. It was built in 1738 according to the plans of the Italian architect Pietro Passalacqua. The latter was inspired by the Spanish Steps in Rome. The church itself is one of the finest examples of Baroque architecture in Dubrovnik. In particular, it houses a grotto dedicated to Our Lady of Lourdes in France. The stairs served as a filming location for Cersei Lannister’s Walk of Shame scene in Game of Thrones.
