At twenty-one, Paul has just been demobilised. Disappointed by civilian life and anxious to integrate, he is looking for a job but also for love. Through political commitment and sentimental encounters, the young man tries to give meaning to his life. In a bar where he meets his friend Robert, a left-wing political activist, he meets Madeleine and falls in love with her.
