The Walking Dead: the 10 iconic filming locations

TV show
Adapted from the comic book by Robert Kirkman and Charlie Adlard, the series The Walking Dead initiated at the time of its release a real revival of films and series about zombies. It was mainly shot in Atlanta and the surrounding area.

Stories of Walkers

A mysterious virus brings the dead back to life. Rick Grimes, a particularly pugnacious lawman, leads a group of survivors in a devastated world…

The hospital where Rick wakes up (season 1, episode 1)

Severely shot in a gunfight, Sheriff’s Deputy Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln) wakes up in an abandoned hospital. Managing to get out of bed, he barely makes it to the exit and discovers the extent of the disaster that has hit the city. In reality, it is not a hospital at all buta building belonging to the Atlanta Mission, an organization that helps the homeless.

Address: Atlanta Mission, 2353 Bolton Rd NW, Atlanta, GA 30318, USA

Rick’s House (season 1, episode 1)

When Rick Grimes awakens, the world has descended into chaos. Back in his house, he realizes that his family is no longer there. Estimated at $835,000, this 2150 sq ft, typically American-style home has three bedrooms and two bathrooms. Equipped with a nice porch, it also has a large garden and a driveway leading to the road. The Walking Dead has spawned two spin-off series: Fear The Walking Dead and The Walking Dead: World Beyond.

Rick arrives in Atlanta (season 1, episode 1)

Eager to get to Atlanta as quickly as possible to try to find his wife and son, Rick rides his horse into the city among the abandoned cars. He enters Atlanta from the east on the freeway through Freedom Park. The view of the Atlanta Skyline was added in post-production.

Address: John Lewis Freedom Pkwy NE, Atlanta, GA, USA

Zombie Attack (Season 1, Episode 1)

As he rides his horse slowly through the streets of Atlanta, Rick is attacked by a group of undead. Located in the heart of Downtown Atlanta, this iconic location is still easily recognizable today. Beware of the sudden appearance of zombies! It is to Frank Darabont that we owe the development of the series from the eponymous comic book by Robert Kirkman. Director of the first episode, he was nevertheless fired by the AMC channel following a dispute over the drastic budget cuts imposed by the production.

Address: 66 Walton St NW, Atlanta, GA 30303, USA

The Career (Season 1, episode 1 and 2)

This is where Lori (Sarah Wayne Callies) and Carl (Chandler Riggs) and a disparate group of survivors found refuge. Rick finally reunites with his family at the end of his dangerous escapade in Atlanta in this place. This former granite quarry was bought by the city and has since been transformed into a park and reservoir. It is possible to get there but only organized expeditions allow you to go down to the bottom.

Address: Lois Street Northwest, Atlanta, GA 30318, USA

Woodbury (season 3, episode 3)

Andrea (Laurie Holden) and Michonne (Danai Gurira) were captured and brought to Woodbury. They then meet the Governor (David Morrissey). Rather than shooting in the real Woodbury, the production preferred to exploit the main street of Senoia, Georgia. All the outdoor scenes taking place in the Governor’s town were also filmed here.

Alexandria (season 6)

Aaron (Ross Marquand) finds Rick’s group and invites him to come and settle in the safe zone of Alexandria, a village founded by Deanna Monroe (Tovah Feldshuh). It was still in Senoia that the film crew decided to set up their cameras to film the scenes taking place in Alexandria, this posh village supposedly near Washington D.C.

Address: Baggarly Way, Senoia, GA 30276, USA

The Hill

Maggie (Lauren Cohan) and her friends settle on the Hill, not without causing some turmoil within the established authority. Many scenes on the Hill or at the Sanctuary, the headquarters of the Saviours of Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan), were filmed in Senoia, in the Raleigh Studios, which can be visited. Animations around The Walking Dead are regularly organized to fully immerse yourself in the atmosphere of the series.

Address: 600 Chestlehurst Rd, Senoia, GA 30276, USA (as is the Sanctuary)

Execution scene with Negan

Trapped by Negan and his men, Rick and his friends are forced to submit. Far from being lenient, Negan then decides to make an example by executing Abraham (Michael Cudlitz) and Glenn (Steven Yeun). The scene traumatized the fans! Introduced in the last episode of season 6, Negan, the great villain of The Walking Dead, also present in the comics, offered his interpreter Jeffrey Dead Morgan, a most consequent exposure. This actor has previously made a name for himself by playing the Comedian in Zack Snyder’s film Watchmen.

Address: 516 Chestlehurst Rd, Senoia, GA 30276, USA

Bridge Explosion (Season 9, Episode 5)

Faced with a situation with potentially deadly consequences, Rick decides to blow up the bridge that he and his friends have recently built to stop the progress of a horde of zombies. Rick’s destiny did not fail to surprise the fans. An upheaval that raises a lot of questions. Season 9 also marked the departure of showrunner Scott Gimple in favour of Angela Kang.
