Spider-Man on PS4: a stroll through Manhattan in New York City

Movie Video game
The game Spider-Man, developed by Insomniac Games, was released exclusively on PS4. It's too good an opportunity to weave its web in Manhattan, the nerve centre of the Big Apple, but also to admire the mythical locations of the various spider movies in the neighbourhood.

Weave your web with Spider-Man in Manhattan

Follow in the footsteps of your favorite weaver without leaving your living room, thanks to the Spider-Man game. While swinging from one skyscraper to the next, you can easily see the must-see places from the films of Sam Raimi, Marc Webb or Jon Watts, which we also mention in our New York Guide to the 1000 cult places of films, series, music, comic books and novels. Small inventory of fixtures:

New York Public Library

It is in front of the New York library that Uncle Ben (Cliff Robertson) is murdered by a thief whom Peter had not dared to arrest before. The phrase uttered by his uncle before he died will mark him enormously: “With great power comes great responsibility” This event was the birthplace of Spider-Man. A great friend of Sam Raimi, Bruce Campbell, who played Ash Williams in the Evil Deadsaga, has been offered several small roles in the trilogy. He is the presenter of the wrestling match in the first episode while he is found in the skin of the person in charge of hosting a theater in the second. He finally encamps an employee of a restaurant in the third.

Columbia University

During a visit to Columbia University with his school, Peter meets Norman, the father of his friend Harry Osborn (James Franco), in front of the steps of the Low Library. In the second installment, Peter Parker attends classes in the same institution, although his schedule is so busy that he risks deportation. Built in 1895, this library is one of the oldest buildings of the university.

Daily Bugle

The famous Flatiron Building lends its façade to the Daily Bugle, the New York tabloid where Peter (Tobey Maguire) sells his photos, including those of Spider-Man. Tobey Maguire’s parents separated two years after his birth. As a result of this event, his reconstituted, very poor family regularly moves from town to town. To help his mother and four half-brothers, he left school and went on to do the advertising castings. Instead, he wanted to become a cook, but reoriented himself when his mother offered him $100 to take acting classes. It was during the audition for the sitcom Parenthood that the actor became Leonardo DiCaprio’s best friend, still unknown to the general public.

Times Square

In The Amazing Spider-Man: The Destiny of a Marc Webb hero, Max Dillon (Jamie Foxx), just turned into Electro, wanders around Times Square and causes a huge blackout. Surprised by the enemy he had met earlier by simply passing in love with the weaver hero, Spider-Man (Andrew Garfield) tries to stop him.

Avengers Tower

The Tony Stark Tower became, in the first Avengers, an antenna for a portal opening the way to Earth for the aliens. Later, the same tower served as the operational base for the Avengers superhero team. Located in place of the MetLife Building, above Grand Central Terminal at 200 Park Avenue, the headquarters of these protectors of the planet has been abused more than once, only to be relocated later upstate. This splendid tower in the heart of New York is a real must-see.

Spider-Man was absent during the first Avengers and for good reason: he was too young at the time according to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. It should be remembered that the two former sagas were commissioned by Sony, the owner of the exploitation rights of Spider-Man. This does not prevent him from taking his revenge and posing in front of the building that housed one of the most thrilling sequence shots of the saga.

Avengers Building

This place was added for the video game, since the Avengers’ building is actually, in the movies, located at the Met Life Building, then upstate. However, the opportunity is too good for the spider to pose in front of the building housing the biggest superheroes, absent from the game because they are, according to him, on the west coast at the time of his arrival.

The saddest Easter Egg in history.

This last point is not really a film location, but rather an element to be known. The game contains the saddest easter egg in the history of development.

An easter egg is when the game’s developers hide something that only a true fan will find. The very first one was invented by Warren Robinett for the Adventure game released in 1979. It was a question of finding an invisible pixel, which allowed access to a secret room with the name of its developer. Spider-Man is filled with all sorts of references to the Weaver universe, but the story doesn’t end there.

A young man named Tyler wanted to give his girlfriend Maddie a huge surprise. He contacted the developers via Twitter to incorporate an easter egg, a marriage proposal for his girlfriend, into the game.

He will be satisfied, as the creators have placed his request on the front of a cinema. The problem is, a few weeks before the game came out, and too late to withdraw the statement, Maddie left Tyler. The magnificent proposal will unfortunately be in vain.
