Shooting locations for the series Jane the Virgin

TV show
After five seasons, the Jane the Virgin series came to an end. To follow in the footsteps of the Villanueva family, discover the filming locations of the show event.

Jane the Virgin, Florida to California

Supposed to take place in Miami, Florida, the filming of Jane the Virgin was actually done around Los Angeles, California. While this may seem surprising, it’s not the first time a series shot in Los Angeles has pretended to be set in a completely different city. Brooklyn Nine-Nine, NCIS, Bones, The Odd Couple, How I Met Your Mother, Supergirl… All of them take us across the United States while being filmed near Hollywood. The proximity of well-equipped studios, the residence of actors and technical teams are all criteria influencing the decision.

If one looks closely at the series, few landscapes are shown on the screen. Many scenes take place indoors, in car parks or in front of a building… Never the typical swamps of the Floridian city or monuments appear.

But some elements are not just scenery. Discover the real places in Los Angeles used for the series.

The Villanueva’s house in Jane the Virgin

Villanueva House – Jane the Virgin

The famous Villanueva family, composed of grandmother Alba, alias Abuela (Ivonne Coll), mother Xiomara (Andrea Navedo) and daughter Jane (Gina Rodriguez) live in this house. All the main characters of the series once found themselves within these walls for crying, laughing or confiding in each other on the terrace swing. Located a few meters from the studios, the location of this house allowed the production team to shoot some exterior shots quickly. Thanks to this series, Gina Rodriguez won the 2015 Golden Globe for Best Actress in a Comedy Series. A first for the actress, but also for CW, the production channel of Jane the Virgin.

Marbella

While most of the Marbella sets, including the rooms and lobby, are studio sets, the pool and outdoor stages were shot in this real hotel, Ritz-Carlton in Marina del Rey. Belonging first to Rafael’s father (Carlo Rota), to Rafael (Justin Baldoni) and then to Petra (Yael Grobglas), Marbella is regularly at the heart of the action. Yael Grobglas plays both Petra and her twin sister, Anezka. While many artists are inspired by their loved ones for a role, Yael Grobglas took her cat as a model for the role of the evil twin. When presented with the character as “passionate about food and having a mania for scratching and screaming”, she replied that she knew someone like that.

Holy Crown Church

Jane finally marries the man she loves, Michael Cordero (Brett Dier). After multiple adventures, love triangles and pregnancy by insemination, these misfortunes are behind them. While the sign says Holy Crown Church, it is actually at Trinity Lutheran Church that the lovebirds say yes. Jane’s father, Rogelio de la Vega, is played by Jaime Camil. If his role as an actor in telenovela is so successful, it is mainly thanks to his background. Indeed, Jaime has distinguished himself in the Mexican telenovela La Fea Màs Bella, a remake of the original version of Ugly Betty, Yo soy Betty, la fea.

Montana Ranch

In full amnesia after his “death”, Michael, alias Jason, finds refuge in this Montana ranch where he builds a whole new personality. He introduces Jane to country life and convinces her to leave Miami and join him in his new home. Instead of Montana, the production took over part of Disney’s Golden Oak Ranch. If the name doesn’t speak to the common man, it is regularly seen on the screen. The places embody Camp Lehigh in Captain America: First Avenger, Camp Weehawken in Sex Friends, the Twin Pines Ranch in Back to the Future and the planet Melona IV in Star Trek: The Next Generation.
