The Pogues were formed in 1982 in London under the name Pogue Mahone. The folk band was composed of Peter Stacy, MacGowan and Jem Finer. The members were soon joined by Cait O’Riordan, Jeremy Finer and Andrew Ranken. Together they released their first album, Red Roses for Me in 1984.

Next came guitarist Phil Chevron, with whom they recorded Rum, Sodomy and the Lash.

Surprisingly, they set Fairytale of New York, a Christmas song, to music in 1988. They broke up in 1996. Then they reformed five years later. The group then toured extensively and published anthologies and best of lists of their songs. They finally split up in 2014.
