Shane MacGowan was born in England to Irish parents and was immersed in the traditional music of his country from an early age by his mother, a singer and dancer.

In 1982, he co-founded the folk group The Pogues. Despite their success, he became addicted to drugs and alcohol. He left the band in 1991 to form a new one: Shane MacGowan and The Popes.
