Marcel Pagnol (domaine public / Studio Harcourt)

Marcel Pagnol was a French writer, producer and director, born in 1895 and died in 1974.

After graduating in philosophy and studying literature, Marcel Pagnol was appointed teacher at Condorcet high school in Paris in 1922.

He published his first plays three years later. He took a leave of absence from national education and continued writing plays such as Topaze, then Marius. The latter was made into a film in 1931.

Then came the shooting of Fanny and César, also from the theatre.

Marcel Pagnol then decided to direct feature films himself, including Jofroi, Angèle, Merlusse, Cigalon, La femme du boulanger and Regain.

After World War II, he was elected to the Académie française and filmed Manon des sources and Les lettres de mon moulin.

In 1957, he wrote his Souvenirs d’enfance (Childhood Memories), which includes La gloire de mon père (The Glory of My Father), Le château de ma mère (My Mother’s Castle) and Le temps des secrets (Time of Secrets).
