Jules Sandeau is a French playwright and writer born in 1811 and died in 1883.

After meeting Aurore Dupin, Jules Sandeau decided to write newspaper articles with her under the pseudonym J. Sand (Sand for Sandeau). He then let her use Sand, to which she added George without the S.

For a while he was secretary to Honoré de Balzac. He published Mademoiselle de la Seiglière, his most popular novel and became an academician in 1858.
