Medical Examiner's Office
While a portion of the mansion in which much of the action of Knives Out is set was built in a studio to facilitate Rian Johnson’s direction, he used real locations as much as possible. The doctor’s office where Marta (Ana de Armas) and Ransom (Chris Evans) go is a genuine one. Set on fire in the film, it fortunately met a less fatal fate in reality.
A star is born
Ana de Armas, the lead in Knives Out, welcomed the film’s script as a real opportunity. She came back on this decisive turning point in her career in the columns of Vanity Fair: “Usually, Latin characters are portrayed in a very narrow, basic and cliché way in movies. I try to get away from such patterns. In this, Rian Johnson has given me a whole universe to explore with the role of Marta.” The young actress having thus recovered the most decisive role, but also the most atypical. Marta has the particularity of vomiting every time she lies.
The foundations of an extended universe
The box-office success of Knives Out encouraged Rian Johnson to sign a $490 million deal with Netflix to shoot two sequels to his film. The first one, titled Glass Onion, was released in December 2022 and quickly established itself as one of the platform’s biggest hits.
The filming of Knives Out lasted barely 2 months.
