Marriage Story locations in New York and Los Angeles

Marriage story, a painful divorce

Director Noah Baumbach imagines the story of the inevitable tearing apart of Nicole and Charlie, a couple with a son named Henry.

New York director Charlie Barber (Adam Driver) is married to Nicole (Scarlett Johansson), a former teenage feature film actor. Parents of a little boy, their love is strong. They even took the risk of working together.

But a professional proposition on the other side of the United States for the young woman turns the couple’s life upside down. She even wants to take Henry (Azhy Robertson) with her. The spouses then decide to divorce, initially without a lawyer.

When Nicole landed in Los Angeles, she took a different path, hired a tough lawyer…

The American filmmaker has chosen to set up his cameras in New York and Los Angeles, in places that are well known to Americans and tourists. Thus you will discover the street where the couple lives but also the bar frequented by the theatre company or the lawyers’ offices in the City of Angels.

From New York…

The Laundromat

Laundromat Wash & Dry, 173 7th Ave, Brooklyn, NY 11215, USA

While the exact location number of the Barbers’ apartment is not known, there are several clues to the street where they live. They settled in Park Slope in the Brooklyn neighborhood, near the 7 Avenue B/Q subway station on Flatbush Avenue. Nicole is stopped on this street by a group of activists who ask her to sign a petition on animal rights and Charlie is discovered in front of the laundromat.

Noah Baumbach imagined Marriage Story based on anecdotes and feelings about his own life and his divorce from actress Jennifer Jason Leigh. Previously, in 2005, he had directed The Squid and the Whale, a feature film inspired by the tensions between his parents.

Knickerbocker Bar & Grill

33 University Pl, New York, NY 10003, USA

This bar-restaurant is the meeting place of the theatre company to which Nicole belongs. Not far from New York University, this place also houses a concert hall where jazz bands perform every Friday and Saturday.

The Knickerbocker Bar & Grill is also the scene of a tense scene between Nicole and Charlie, then on the verge of breaking up.

Scarlett Johansson drew on her own experience for the role of Nicole. During the filming of the movie, she was actually in a period of divorce in reality.

Studio of the theatre company

Gibney Dance Choreographic Studio, 890 Broadway 5th floor, New York, NY 10003, USA

Gibney Dance Choreographic Studio serves as the set for the company’s rehearsals. Founded in 1991 by Gina Gibney, the studio was intended to be a performance and social action company.

The spectators discover the place with the actors, except for Nicole. At that time, she was replaced after she left for Los Angeles. In addition to two albums released in 2008 and 2009, Anywhere I Lay My Head and Break Up, which she composed, Scarlett Johansson has her double in the animated series Looney Tunes. She’s a real star for the whole family.

Charlie got a call from Nicole’s lawyer.

Times Square, Manhattan, NY 10036, USA

Walking in Times Square, Charlie receives a call from Nora Fanshaw (Laura Dern). Nicole’s lawyer asks him why he hasn’t yet filed the divorce papers and tells him that if he doesn’t respond quickly, she will file for a default divorce.

Adam Driver and his wife, actress Joanne Tucker, created Arts in the Armed Forces, an association that provides free arts and cultural programs for military members and their families.

In addition to these four New York locations, Noah Baumbach used buildings in the city of Los Angeles as sets for Marriage Story.

…in Los Angeles

Lawyers’ Offices

Century City, 2000 Avenue of the Stars, Los Angeles CA, USA

Charlie goes to Los Angeles to see his son and work out the divorce issues. He then moved to the lawyers’ offices located in this glass building designed by architect Gensler. Delivered in 2007, it faces the towers of Century City.

Prior to taking drama classes at The Juilliard School between 2005 and 2009, Adam Driver chose to join the Marines just after the September 11 attacks. He worked for two years at Camp Pendleton in California. While he was to join the front line in Iraq, he was demobilized due to a sternum injury caused by a fall while riding an ATV. It was after the accident that he wanted to become a comedian.

Courthouse

Los Angeles Superior Court’s Stanley Mosk Courthouse, 600 S Commonwealth Ave, Los Angeles, CA 90005, USA

Sitting on a bench inside the courthouse, Nora and Nicole discover that Charlie has changed lawyers. He decided to call in Jay Marotta (Ray Liotta).

The defendant is known to be tough on business, but he is too aggressive for his client. By the way, he leaves the building annoyed.

Jay and Nora’s indictments are epic and very funny. For the purposes of the role, Laura Dern observed many of the lawyers during their oral arguments. For the scene about Henry’s custody, she performs a real actress performance and delivers a very feminist committed speech. Before that, she briefed her client, saying, “You have to be perfect, Charlie has a right to be a failure.”

A real success on Netflix and appreciated by critics (nominations at the Venice Mostra, 5 Oscar nominations, 5 Golden Globes and 3 BAFTA nominations), Marriage Story is the dramatic comedy of the year 2019 for which Los Angeles and New York are the ideal setting for Noah Baumbach’s feature film.
