New York: Top 10 of Ghostbusters filming locations

A mythical movie from the 80s, Ghostbusters left its mark on an entire generation. More than thirty years after it first came out in 1984 and then a sequel in 1989, the diptych by Ivan Reitman remains very popular, just like the many places in New York that he immortalized, in particular his famous fire station. The prequel though, which came out in 2016, was for the most part filmed in Boston.

Guide New York of 1000 cult movies, series, musics, comics and novels locations

A fire house still running, the emblematic Ghostbusters headquarters continues to attract a lot of people.  This fire house was one of the first to intervene after the terrorist attacks of September 9th, 2001.  It almost closed in 2011 due to budgetary restrictions, but the mobilization of the neighboring residents, very attached to this building dating from 1895, insured its continuation.  On site, the links with Ghostbuster still exist: first of all on the sidewalk where a huge emblem has been painted, making the link between the Ghostbusters logo and the fire fighters, while further along inside, in full view, there’s a Ghostbusters 2 poster!  We can also see several objects found in the rubble of the World Trade Center.  The firemen are very friendly and will willingly take a break to chat with tourists coming here.  But don’t expect to find the Ghostbusters headquarters intact, the interior scenes were filmed in an abandoned fire station in Los Angeles!

New York Public Library

Setting for the first ghoul hunt in the film, you really shouldn’t miss the New York library.  Go up to the top floor to admire the superb “Rose Reading Room”.  It’s here that Peter Venkman (Bill Murray) and Raymond Stantz (Dan Aykroyd) join up with Egon Spengler (Harold Ramis).  Don’t try and reproduce the noisy entrance in the film though! Access to this vast room may be open to all, but silence is the rule.

Statue of Liberty

No need for introductions here.  Miss Liberty plays a decisive role in the second film and leaves her pedestal on Liberty Island to lend a hand to the phantom hunters.  It goes without saying that this only happens in movies!  The venerable lady has remained solidly anchored in the port of New York since 1886 and attracts a large number of movie makers and tourists alike.
