The Irishman: Martin Scorsese's film event in 10 locations

Movie

The Irishman, a trip to the United States

The Irishman was filmed in five states: Pennsylvania, Michigan, Ohio, New York and Florida… Overview of the most emblematic sites…

Umberto’s Clam House

132 Mulberry Street, New York, USA

Frank “The Irishman” Sheeran (Robert De Niro) goes to this restaurant and coldly kills a member of the New York Mafia . Opened in 1972 by a certain Umberto Ianniello, this establishment specialising in seafood quickly became a meeting point for Italian-American mafia mobsters. It is here, two months after the inauguration, that Joe Gallo, a gangster from the Profaci family, was killed. An event that contributed to the reputation of the place. In 1996, Umberto’s, then located at 129 Mulberry Street, closed its doors before reopening in 2000 at number 178 on the same street. He moved again in 2010 to his current location. The Irishman marks the reunion of Martin Scorsese and his favourite actor Robert De Niro. De Niro meets here his comrade from Les Affranchis and Casino, Joe Pesci, but also Harvey Keitel. It is also the occasion for Al Pacino to play for the first time in a film by the great Scorsese.

58-48 Catalpa Avenue, New York, New York, USA

Frank Sheeran (Robert De Niro) learns one day that the local grocer pushed his little girl (Lucy Gallina) while she was in his shop. Without trying to understand the causes of such an act, Frank rushes into the store and violently attacks the merchant in front of his child’s dumbfounded gaze… Scorsese used this commercial space in Queens several times in his film. It is therefore here that the grocery store sequence takes place, but it is also within these walls that the scenes taking place in the Friendly Lounge bar were filmed. The exteriors of the Villa di Roma restaurant were also shot at this intersection.

Baptism

5815 Catalpa Avenue, Ridgewood, USA

Frank Sheeran and his friends meet in this church…

Texaco Service Station

Saw Mill River Road, Elmsford, USA

On their way to a wedding in Detroit, Frank, Russell (Joe Pesci) and their wives stop at this charming gas station, the very spot where many years earlier they first met… Located in New York State, this most picturesque rest area is right next to the Great Hunger Memorial. A monument to the millions of Irish people who died during the great famine. Famine forced many Irish people to leave their country to join the New World.

Frank’s Retirement Home

Summit Park Hospital and Nurse Care, Pomona, USA

Frank Sheeran lives in that nursing home. This is where the old man begins the story of his incredible existence, confessing his darkest secrets… The Irishman starts with a sequence shot. The camera moves slowly through the retirement home before revealing Frank Sheeran sitting in his wheelchair, ready to “sit down” …

Russell Bufalino’s HQ

110 Layayette Avenue, Suffern, New York, USA

The mob boss runs his business out of this fabric store in Philadelphia… It was in this shop in Suffern, a small town in the state of New York on the border with New Jersey, that Martin Scorsese established Russell Bufalino’s headquarters. The magnificent Lafayette Theater, an art-deco theatre that can be admired in the same street, also appears in the film.

Secret Rendezvous Dinner

56-26 Maspeth Avenue, Maspeth, USA

Whispers DiTulllio (Paul Herman) meets Frank to ask him to eliminate a competitor. All this without knowing that the competitor in question is linked to the Bufalino family… It is in this former restaurant, renovated for the occasion, that the film crews set up their cameras. A diner since closed again due to a fire that destroyed it, but once called, it can’t be invented, GoodFellas Diner (The Goodfellas being the original title of Les Affranchis, another Martin Scorsese classic).

Weir’s Ice Cream

2159 NY-94, Salisbury Mills, USA

Jimmy Hoffa, Frank and his family are enjoying an ice cream sundae on the terrace of this diner… Opened in 1956, this mythical glacier has hardly changed since its beginnings. Convenient for Martin Scorsese, as in this case almost no modifications were necessary. If you want to enjoy one of their delicious ice creams, be careful, Weir’s is only open from April to September.

The International Brotherhood of Teamsters

Hempstead Town Clerk, 1 Washington Street, Hempstead, USA

It is here, from this building, that Jimmy Hoffa runs his powerful Teamsters Union… Hempstead is one of three towns in Nassau County, New York. Located east of Queens, it has a population of more than 750,000, making it the second largest in the state after New York. The real headquarters of the Teamsters, the powerful union to which Jimmy Hoffa belonged for a long time, is located in Washington DC, at 25 Louisiana Avenue.

Latin Casino

1309 Walnut Street, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA

Promoted to the head of a division of the union, Frank Sheeran was honoured at a lavish reception in Philadelphia, in the presence of all his friends and associates. Opened in 1944, the Latin Casino was one of Philadelphia’s most prestigious venues until it closed in the 1980s after a fire. Many top stars have played there, from Frankie Avalon to Frank Sinatra, Donna Summer and, more recently, the Ramones, Dire Straits, Cyndi Lauper or The Cure and Blue öyster Cult. Although Subaru established its headquarters at this address in 1986, the building was eventually demolished in May 2019. Martin Scorsese reenacted the Latin Casino at the Harlem Alhambra Ballroom in New York.
