New York: West Side Story being retold by Steven Spielberg

The famous musical by Arthur Laurents, Stephen Sondheim and Leonard Bernstein, a modern adaptation of Romeo and Juliette, is currently being remade by director Steven Spielberg.

Something's coming in the West Side Story

New York in the 1950s. Two rival gangs, the Jets and the Sharks, share the West district. The first is composed of Americans of Polish, Irish and Italian origin and the second of immigrants from Porto Rico. Provocation and confrontation are the daily lot. The former head of the Jets, Tony (Richard Beymer), falls in love with the sister of the Sharks leader, Maria (Nathalie Wood). But, their love is impossible due to the rivalry between their respective clans.

Awarded ten Oscars, rated among the 100 best American films by the American film Institute, the Jerome Robbins and Robert Wise film made the playground where memorable dance battles took place especially famous as we mention in our Guide to New York – 1000 cult locations in movies, series, music, comics, novels. At the moment, Steven Spielberg is working on a remake and has already announced that Rita Morena, who played Anita in the 1961 version, is part of the cast.

What’s different this time is that the members of the Sharks gang will be played by real Latinos, contrary to the first version where the actors all had make-up.

The cinema release of this new version is planned for 2020. Remember, in American, anything is possible.
